Notes on the various DOS Floppy Disk Formats This is not an official DOS format and may not be recognised by DOS, and Windows. The one exception involves the 720K, 5.25 inch format. DOS and Windows operating systems can recognise a Floppy Disks format and will read from, and write to, almost any disk format. Over the years as Floppy Disk technology has improved, DOS has followed this evolution and quite a few disk formats have resulted. The first IBM PC's used a single sided floppy disk drive.
